Overland Park, Kan. — This month marks Rochdale Paragon’s 24th annual Volunteer Leadership Institute (VLI) governance conference. This year’s virtual program featured NCUA Board Member and former Chairman Rodney Hood as a keynote speaker, who addressed conference participants for the first time since stepping down as Chairman.
Traditionally hosted in Hawaii, the VLI conference brings credit union volunteers and senior leaders together from across the nation to discuss key issues and emerging challenges facing credit unions, ultimately strengthening the industry through continued advancement of board governance.
In his address, Mr. Hood praised credit union directors for their commitment and emphasized the necessity of advancing governance as the industry faces critical strategic decisions. Mr. Hood went on to outline his key focus areas in supporting and providing regulatory oversight for credit unions, including the necessity of growth, financial inclusion, a new NCUA innovation and access lab, and governance needs.
“The industry’s success is built on the strength of its volunteer leaders,” Mr. Hood said. “It is the resilient spirit demonstrated by these leaders that will ensure we emerge from today’s challenges stronger than ever.”

VLI’s mission is to ensure directors have access to critical topics and the means to tackle future challenges. While VLI has historically hosted its event in Hawaii, this year’s conference moved to a virtual platform and has lengthened its program due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The conference offers one-hour sessions occurring every Tuesday and Thursday from Jan. 21 to Feb. 25.
Long known as one of the largest and most well-respected credit-union-board-focused conferences, VLI seeks to bring governance to the forefront, to deliver on the most vital topics and to leverage the top leaders and guest speakers throughout the industry and beyond.
“Governance is singularly focused on the long-term performance and success of the organization,” said Tony Ferris, Rochdale Paragon CEO. “The enormity of challenges ahead requires boards to strengthen their capabilities. Together with our attendees, Rochdale explores difficult and emerging issues in advancing board preparedness. Embodied in this forward-thinking by volunteers is the answer to credit union vitality and viability long-term.”
